I had one, and only one, goal for today: to rework the opening scene of my YA novel (working title: The House of Doors). That was my plan. And I did make a little progress, I guess. But. See. Here's what I've really been thinking about:
My friend Melissa insisted that I watch Married to The Eiffel Tower, a documentary about Objectum-Sexuality (I posted it over at URFCKD, if you want to watch it). And instead of thinking about how a secretive and snarky thirteen year old girl would react to this and that, I've been thinking about a short story about an OS, who is in a long-term committed relationship with a particular staircase or something, who (in a moment of weakness) has a one night stand with a foot long double-ended dildo. The OS accidentally falls in love with the dildo, and struggles with the complications of loving (the equivalent of) a hooker or a porn star, as well as the crippling guilt of adultery.
In case you were wondering, shifting gears from one story to the other is not an easy task...
In other news, I've been feeling a strong compulsion to start crafting life-sized, soft-bodied dolls with paper mache heads and limbs. They would, of course, look like me. Sort of as totally tactile/posable self-portraits. I imagine this urge will pass, but if it doesn't, I'll keep you posted.
(And speaking of things Melissa has clued me in on: I was organizing my inbox and found a link to this article she sent me a while ago. I remember thinking it was amusing enough then, but now I can totally relate to it...)

i seriously like your new story idea. i don't really know what the other one is about, but i'm voting for the double-ended dildo (but, let's be honest, when wouldn't i vote for the double-ended dildo???).
also, i judge everyone by their books. which is why i sent that to you in the first place. when i saw that a certain someone had "written on the body" in their collection, it was over.
oh, also, i've had a bit of wine.
The doll idea is good. But what about my gaggle-of-high-school-students-as-not-slaves idea? Can we revisit that? Please?
I like all of the above, esp the short story idea (because I don't really know anything about your current work in progress).
And though you probably have, did you read House of Leaves?
Mel: Trust the lesbian to advocate double-ended dildos. Ha.
Ryan: No. I thought I made it perfectly clear that I will not be that 25 y.o. who hangs out with high schoolers.
Aaron: Yes, I have. I actually loved House of Leaves (and I'm ready for the onslaught of criticism that admitting this is sure to provoke...)
All: I've been vague about the other project because it's still taking shape, but "House of Doors" takes it name from a 'clubhouse' that the protagonist spends her time in; it's literally built from doors. While the details are still coming together, it is (and I hate to admit this) heavily influenced by the same Norse mythology that inspired Tolkein. Though H.o.D. is set in modern-day America and is more character-driven than a lot of fantasy (which is to say, it is more about the human characters than fantastical beasts and such). Remember, it's targeted at pre-teens/teenagers.
And when I say "more character-driven than a lot of fantasy," I mean, "it focuses more on the human element of certain fantastic situations, instead of magics and miracles and the like."
